There are numerous types and locations of hazardous material found in the marine environment. It is often transported as cargo, used as supplies on board commercial vessels, or may be an inherent hazard associated with the product being carried on board. Hazardous Material is found on ships, boats, facilities and marinas. You should be aware of it and treat any marine emergency as a potential hazardous material incident until proven otherwise.
Where might you find the above sign?Do you know where Hydrogen Sulfide (UN 1053) is often found in relation to cargo on board vessels and facilities?Many of you may be thinking the sewage treatment (which is true, but that is not often carried as cargo), but more commonly, it is found as a byproduct of Sour Crude Oil.Many first responders responding to an incident involving crude oil may visualize the often used pictures of the Exxon Valdez spill.There is much more to crude oil than the visible impacts to wildlife.H2S, flammable vapors, carcinogens, are examples, just to name a few.The above sign is common found at many refineries that handle crude oil.
